BE THE SUPERMAN

Someone asked me, "What's the difference between a man and a superman?"

I quoted, "A man makes his own standard and a superman surpasses them." That's the most laconic reply I could think of.

Each of us must have gone through several hurdles and failures to arrive at this juncture, worked hard but still fell short of expectations. Well, the essence of life rests in keep trying, to keep knocking at the door. One mustn't be afraid to face challenges and obstacles. They vortex out our latent strength and capabilities, which were somehow not apparent.

Avoid them and they grow on you.
Face them on,
And they will perish,
Leaving behind a stronger you.

All of us have indulged in introspection at one point or the other. Ever ask your purpose of existence? Just surviving and leading a so-called "happy life" should not be taken for an answer. With all the faculties that we are accorded with, it's equivalent to digging a hole with a nuclear bomb.

We are conditioned like an elephant, which right from its birth has been chained to a tree and whose innumerable attempts of breaking free turn futile. As it grows older, it becomes strong enough to lift tons of weight but still is in awe of that frail chain and never attempts to break it.

Why are we so easily satisfied? Why can't we think beyond ourselves? It's high time we start thinking about society also and what one can do to make it a better place. Only by shattering the shackles of narcissism can one find his/ her real destination.

History is laden with instances, though few, of ordinary men who persisted against all odds. When innumerable Homo sapiens threw in the towel, there were some who took it to the last round and persevered. As the stature of the impediments grew steadily, so was their determination.

In the end, their resolute willpower toppled the indomitable barriers as they conquered the impossible. The world, as we know, is a testimony to these exiguous people. They defied the rules, crushed the prejudicial norms and in the process, established new benchmarks leaving their indelible impressions firmly ensconced in the chronicles of humanity.

At this point, I want to narrate a story. This is an account, in the bible, of the battle between David and Goliath.

[The Israelites are at war with the Philistines. For forty days, twice in each day, Goliath, the champion of the Philistines comes out of the Philistine camp and challenges the Israelites to send out their best warrior so as to decide the outcome of war in a single combat. But everyone in the Israelites army is afraid of him. As fate would have it, David was present there as he brought food for his brothers who served in the army.

On being told that the King of Israel, Saul, has promised to reward the man who defeats Goliath, David accepts the challenge. Saul offers him armour but he declines, choosing his sling and five stones over it.

Goliath waits for his opponent with his armour and shield, ferociously thumping the ground. Goliath, a merciless giant, stands around 9 ft tall whereas David is lean and around 6 ft. They engage in a short verbal battle before David hurls his sling with all his might and hits Goliath right between the eyes. The Philistine warrior falls on his face to the ground. David takes Goliaths sword and cuts off his head.]

We are ordinary beings just like David. With faith in ourselves and a burning desire as our fuel, we can drive down even the most 'Goliathic' obstacles and can be a human extraordinaire.

So, if next time someone suggests 'you aren't good enough' or you feel like giving up the fight, just close your eyes and imagine yourself as achieving the goal, flooring your opponent, or whatever (as long as your intentions remain humane).

Feel the power that flows within and then get back to your routine with magnified intensity.

Never forget your roots. With each victory, humbleness shall increment. And each time you are bogged down by hindrances or incinerated by failures, there's an opportunity waiting for inception of the phoenix within to rise to the occasion and maneuver you to the land of your dreams. Just trust that phoenix and become the 'Superman'.
