KENYA'S Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has been voted among top ten most hated airports in the world, according to a CNNGo own travellers survey.
The East African top most airport located in Kenyan capital, is the only airport in Africa that has been voted as one of worst in the world ranking sixth on list which is headed by Paris (France) based Charles de Gaulle airport.
The CNN survey titled, "Can't be disappointed if you're not expecting much," said JKIA was voted due to its cramped spaces; long queues, inadequate seating space, frequent power outages and tiny washrooms.
JKIA was also criticized by travellers for having shabby duty free shops, overpriced food outlets and business class lounges worthy of a shelter in mid-city of Los Angeles.
However, travellers through JKIA said: "As African airports go, it's not that bad-but as an international hub it may be one of the worst out there."
This is the common refrain among travellers through JKIA, who either don't have the heart or the expectations to give this dated aviation facility the kind of pounding reserved for the JFKs and Charles de Gaulles of the world.
Though CNNGo said, "Sure, it's a breeze compared to Lagos but it could be so much better." Saddled with a 1958 blueprint designed for 2.5 million passengers, the survey shows, JKIA receives close to twice that many.
Hence the airport's 2005, Three Phase, 100 million US dollar (170bn/-) expansion project which has seen long delays (something about the rain) and has been spinning its tires somewhere in Phase Two for the last few years.
In the list, second most hated airport is Los Angeles International Airport in United States dubbed "It's not even a good spot for celebrity sightings," followed by London's Heathrow in England described as "You'll fly through departures-at the speed of a penguin."
Other worst airports are Toncontín International, in Honduras, Ninoy Aquino International in Philippines, John F Kennedy International in the US, Tribhuvan International in Nepal, Perth Airport in Australia while Guarulhos International in Brazil which ironically received an award of the best airport in South America conferred by World Airport Awards.
On the other hand, the same survey reveals the best loved and thrilled top three airports in the world are in Far East led by Hong Kong International. The report shows that "This airport' is too busy to gloat."
HKIA is onto newer benchmarks-including entering the world's 50 million annual passenger club (shared with only 10 other airports) and becoming the busiest freight airport on earth.
The second on the best loved and thrilled airport is Singapore Changi which was voted for its hospitality while passengers are waiting for flights.
The airport features swimming pools, whirlpool baths and massage tables, prayer rooms and rooftop bars, LAN gaming areas and free movie theatres and butterfly gardens.
The third best is Seoul Incheon Airport in South Korea due to its thrilled features a traveller said "I don't even care if the flight leaves on time." The airport was crowned as the world's top airport in the annual, customer-survey-based Airport Service Quality Awards.
