Guys, I know you’re going to find this hard to believe, but sometimes some women pretend to have orgasms during sex. No really, it’s true. In a recent survey, 54% of women admitted to faking it. (Obviously, your lady friend is definitely not part of that 54%.)
For the longest time, conventional wisdom has held that the reason women fake orgasms is to protect the fragile male ego from the disappointment of failing to satisfy. But now researchers are starting to think it has nothing to do with making dudes feel good about themselves in that sense.
An interesting new study headed up by Dr. Farnaz Kaighobadi at Columbia University has found that faking orgasm is more closely associated with the level of insecurity a woman has about the status of her relationship. In other words, the more she fears her man may stray, the more likely she is to be a thespian in the sack.
But this isn’t necessarily a conscious strategy. As Dr. Kaighobadi explains, "Pretending orgasm may be part of a broader strategy of mate retention available to women to maintain their intimate relationship."
In other words, faking orgasms may actually be an evolutionary adaptation. Previous research suggested that the evolutionary purpose of the female orgasm may have been to retain sperm from genetically superior mates—with the ability to produce a female orgasm being an indication of this superiority.
Over time, female orgasms would have become signals to males that they have been chosen as mates. Eventually, this way of signalling mate selection may have led to the propensity to fake orgasms.
So don’t give your lady a hard time if you ever do discover she is faking orgasms. She may just be doing what nature programmed her to do.
