California benefitted from a great investment by Verizon Wireless. More than $729 million was spent on all the materials and equipment just in California. This investment caused greater wireless coverage, larger capacities, and more reliable voice and data functions throughout the state. This brings the total amount invested in California to over $7.2 billion spent on wireless broadband and voice infrastructure.
Starting in early 2011, Verizon Wireless started to install its 4G LTE network. The San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego were three of the first cities to get the new 4G LTE service. Throughout the year, Verizon rapidly worked on the 4G LTE expansion all over the Golden State. By the end of the year 75% of the state’s population had access to Verizon’s 4G LTE network.
This is no small achievement, especially when compared to the expansion rates of other wireless providers’ 4G LTE networks. Verizon Wireless claims to have the world’s largest and most advanced 4G LTE network. They also lay claim to the fastest 4G network. Notice the “LTE” is missing as AT&T has its HSPA+ network that it advertises as 4G. HSPA+ is much slower than 4G LTE.
Their 4G LTE network covers 195 US markets and covers a population base of 200 million people. They have a goal of completing their LTE network by the end of 2013. Verizon Wireless has 108.7 million wireless devices owned by 92.2 retail customers.
